1 hour NiCd batter charger is safe and will it last? (In cordless drill, etc)?
I've noticed increasingly wireless drilling using the good-old NiCd battery packs 1 hour charger have. Check out the following links: http://www.toolbarn.com/product/panasonic/EY503B7658/ or http://www.mytoolstore.com/dewalt/dew09-02.html As far as I know the recommended charge is 10% of the rated capacity Amp more than 15 hours. My question is, is insurance, and the battery last? Or is it that has special circuitry to handle high load current, and when / or automatic shutdown completely?
Them are as safe as any electronic device and will run like any other electronic device. NiCad battery can charge as called the C rate (amps specified) if you can feel and condition of the battery and close the load off when the battery is full. The type C is the rate of 1 hours today. I used to maintain a fleet of portable radios with chargers fast. The batteries lasted for usually more than three years. NC should be good for 1,000 cycles of loading / unloading and these batteries were more than a little. You can load a NiCad battery indefinitely 1 / 10 C rate. The stream at this rate the battery is not hot enough to hurt you. 1 hour charger should have the circuit to turn off the fast charge and switch to the slow loading speed when the battery reached a certain point. They have a farm of heat sensor that helps detect bad batteries, and voltage a sensor to determine the state of charge. I used the fast chargers for over 30 years with good results. The popularity of fast chargers is due to the fact that people who use the tools for the job can not wait 15 hours to charge the battery. Even if they had an extra set still would not work. You will need at least 5 or 6 batteries and chargers if they charged to 1 / 10 C just to keep a charged battery in your drill. When charging the battery in 1 hour, you can go ahead with only two batteries.
