In the world of the precious stone, a cabochon is a stone that is cut with a rounded or convex top uncut polished with a flat or slightly domed. A cabochon can be cut into any shape, although oval is by far the most common. The term comes from the French Caboche, ie control or small dome. Some stones are almost always cut "in cabochon, including opal, turquoise, onyx, moonstone, and star sapphire. In the world of the gemstone often hear the term cabochon was shortened to "taxi".
Technically, cabochons are not really "cut". Rather, have the form and polished. Therefore, it is a much simpler task of producing a cabochon which is cutting a faceted gem with many faces. Before the carving art was developed, all gemstones were produced as cabochons, but some were carved as well.
Faceted gemstones made their appearance in European jewelry during the late 14th century and early 13. With the advent of horizontal cutting wheel turning in the late 1400s there was the possibility of designing and repeating geometric patterns designed developed facets, thus controlling and improving the light coming from within the stone.
The fascination with geometry and the light reflected from the Renaissance, accelerated the development of a sophisticated lapidary art. From the Renaissance gem cutting trade of Bruges, Venice, Florence and finally the whole of Europe, light management became the central theme in the cut gem.
Once the technology and skill was available to the gemstones facet, cabochons why are still produced? The question is interesting, because different gems are cut as taxis for different reasons. In many cases because the gem has special properties that are only displayed when it is cut as a cabochon. Examples are the gems that display asterism (star effect) or chatoyancy (the cat's eye effect) or iridescence (eg opal) or adularescence (eg moonstone).
Most of the gems that are opaque and not transparent cabochons are cut as most of facets. Go see the material grade lowest gemstones like sapphire, ruby and garnet cut as taxis. If the gem material has very good color, but not sufficiently transparent or clean to be multifaceted, it still can be shaped and polished as a cabochon very href = "http://www.gemselect.com/other-info/why-cabochons.php"> attractive. It is also common for cutting softer stones such as taxis, as the stones with a hardness below 7 (on the Mohs scale) can be easily scratched by quartz powder and sand. Minute scratches are much less in a cabochon in a facet stone.
