Grasp the sense of apprehension and guillotine trimming your dog's nails long? Does your dog hide at the sight of the Clippers and struggle, mourn and squirm as you try to Trim nails down without touching the dreaded fast and causing a bloodbath?
You are not alone. Most parents feel uncomfortable dog to cut dog's nails. And more … dogs are uncomfortable with the process too – for good reason.
Our own nails – just like a dog – are living with a blood supply and nerves. Pinch your nail bed with pliers and feel the pain.
If you use a guillotine shears or clippers style that the device applies a significant amount of pressure on the nail before you cut through – especially not if the leaves are razor sharp. The pressure presses the fast – no wonder that dogs are resistant to the experience and who have taught to stand still, obedient, are bearing the pain and discomfort.
The quick is actually a vessel inside the nail. We have heard the warnings – cutting nails too and spurts of blood – more pain and stress for you and your dog.
Your dog is not happy, but the nails should be trimmed regularly. The nails may grow too long, so that the distortion of the foot, gait, discomfort and the ever present possibility of a ruptured or torn fingernail that they may require surgical repair.
There is a better, easier, method less pain and stress for pedicure perfect dog – the grinding tool. (Commonly known as a Dremel tool developed for carpenters)
Many Dogs are sensitive to touch in varying degrees and some dogs are finicky about their ears, tails and other body parts, especially feet.
Before reaching the pedicure perfect, start slow and desensitize your dog to the sound of both the tool and the resulting vibration.
Armed with your dog's favorite treats, start with the smooth footwork, followed with a controller and a "good dog". Increase foot massage and soothing and is continuing verbal awards. When you feel your dog Messages comfortable with standing to raise the bar a bit and turn the grinder in a few seconds (do not touch the dog with the tool) off and give the dog a treat.
