Ionization of air and the use of computers
The evidence seems to be mounting that ion concentrations in the air affect how people feel. Furthermore, evidence that the trend toward using computerized equipment can create a special problem.
By air free air contains around a thousand positive and negative charges (ions) in each cubic centimeter. The cosmic rays that reach the earth from the sun and other parts are broken and air molecules and create most of the ionization that exists in the air. Since more cosmic rays come in at high latitudes, the air high latitude usually has a higher proportion of ionized air molecules or molecular clusters. However, in cities and in confined spaces such as offices were computers are used, processes take place to reduce the number of ions. An important process is attachment of charge-carrying molecular clusters to particles pollution in the air. When that happens, both ions and particles of pollution tend to be swept into the air by the electric field that exists naturally near the surface of the earth.
The loss of the ion concentration is believed to be harmful because it seems that high ion concentrations make people feel better – why, it seems clear. The high ion concentrations also apparently inhibit bacterial growth and plant growth perhaps care. The positive effects appear to be attributed to high concentrations of negative ions rather than positive, in general, the concentration of both go hand in hand, except in small volumes of air that perhaps only a few feet wide.
In a room in the amount of ions is considerably low, and an artificial microclimate are generally absent. Ions are present "with the vitamins of the air", we are naturally. In nature, where we are, how fresh air "(sea, mountains, wood, etc.) speaks, the air contains 500 to 3000 of the ions of both polarities in a centimeter cubic. The scientific medical papers have shown the decisive advantages of favorable influence of charged ions:
- Improvement of a psychological state and physical
- Increase disease resistance
- Decreased numbers of bacteria in a room
- Clean air the heavy micro-particles
- Relief effects caused by static electricity
The electric field caused by the positive static charge that appears on a CRT in normal operation sweeps the nearby air of negative charges, thereby depleting the concentration of negative ions surroundings in the immediate future. Apparently, when the ion concentration is reduced by this or any other means – so does air conditioning – workers complain headaches, dizziness and nausea.
Under the influence of electrostatic field and charged particles of dust that accumulate on one side, hands, causing allergies, dry skin and extinction, and eczema several times.
An experiment done in England in 54 people in a team site seems quite convincing. Negative ion generators have been installed, but, unknown to people being tested, the generators not been on for four weeks. During that period, the concentration of negative ions is about 550 per cubic centimeter. In return for secrecy about generators during the next eight weeks of the test raised the ion concentration per cubic centimeter at 3,500 on several occasions that is in the air out of the ordinary. After the experimenters turned on ion generators, they found that people tested had fewer headaches and other complaints than before. Only five percent and said he had headaches, while 20 percent of workers complained of headaches before the ion generators were turned on. The number reporting dizziness and nausea was reduced by more than half, to less than one percent.
Other English tests indicate that the more complex the task is a person, rather than the individual is affected by the levels of negative ions. Women are also more sensitive than men to the decrease of negative ions or enrichment.
