Power tools require up to 50 amps of current and operate in a hostile environment. The tool must perform at subzero temperatures and withstand high heat. Batteries also must withstand shock and vibration.
Most power tools are equipped with nickel-cadmium batteries. nickel-metal-hydride is has tried with limited success. Longevity is a problem, but new designs have improved. Lithium-ion is too delicate and could not provide the high amperage. Lead-acid is too cumbersome and lacks persistent energy supply. The tool of power simply has no suitable alternative to the rugged and hardworking nickel-cadmium.
In an attempt to accumulate more and more energy into power tools, battery voltage is higher. Due to the large current game and application at low temperatures, the cell is important. Game of the cell becomes more critical as the number of cells connected in series increases. A cell is weak less capacity and are downloaded more quickly than the strong. This mismatch causes the reversal of the weak cell in the cell if the battery is discharged at high current 1V/cell below. An electrical short occurs in the weak cell if exposed to the reverse flow and the packet should be replaced. The higher the battery voltage, the most likely damaged by a weak cell.
