Usually containing the rant in this column – I prefer to focus on the sunny side of mobile technology – but I'll make an exception, thanks to a problem that I listen for a while, but came to head this month when I bought a new lawnmower.
Now you're thinking "Would not you do lawnmowers last month? "But let me explain further. As I am a certified gadget addict, this was not just any lawn mower, but an old Bosch Rotak 43LI. The key is, when two letter suffix LI – Yes, a lawn mower powered by lithium-ion batteries.
If you browse the Screwfix catalog, you'll notice just been a flood of new lithium-ion-powered garden and workshop tools – that are rapidly taking over from NiCd and NiMH, thanks to lower weight, longer life and lack of harmful "Memory effect".
It is roughly the same battery technology used title = "laptop battery"> laptops, title = "mobile phone battery"> mobile phones and MP3 players, so that production volume is already set.
I'm very happy with my new mower, but what intrigued me most were the two batteries that came, each of nominal 36V and 2,600 mAh.

That 10.8V, 8100 mAh GBP 2.50/Wh costs, why exactly should a laptop battery that cost much more than a lawn mower?
Both are intended for rugged use (much more than the mower, which is packaged in high-impact rubber), both have deep discharge protection and heat, both include a battery indicator, and do not forget that the mower is made by Bosch, a German company not known for positioning their products to cheap final.
This premium of 66% of portable batteries would be annoying enough – perhaps not enough to supply an entire tirade rule – but also have a few power and garden tools made by Ryobi for its excellent range +, which are also powered by lithium-ion batteries. The same calculation in its batteries comes out at around £ 1.16/Wh, significantly less than half the price of laptop batteries from Sony.
