Carving slate???
I want to carve some writing in a piece of black slate stone. Can I use a router and a carbide bit to do this?

You can try it but I think you will see lots of chipping out. Go slow and not very deep with multiple passes.

Full Guide About Wood Router Bits
There is a bit for every routing task, from simple grooves to intricate moldings. In fact, there are hundreds of cutters available in a variety of profiles and widths.
A typical router bit consists of a steel body with one or more cutting edges and a shank that fits into the router’s collet. Most bits are made from either high-speed steel (HSS) or high-speed steel with carbide cutting edges. Although HSS bits are adequate for cutting softwood, they will not stand up to repeated use in dense hardwood. Carbide-tipped bits, while more expensive and prone to chipping, stay sharp longer and cut more easily through harder wood.
Router bits can be divided into three groups according to their size and function. Edge-forming bits rout decorative profiles in the edges of a workpiece or cut one or both halves of an interlockng joint. Edge-forming bits generally have a ball-bearing pilot located below the cutter that rides along the edge of the workpiece to guide the bit and precisely control the width of the cut. As their name implies, grooving bits are designed to cut grooves and dadoes, and work best in a plunge router. The bits are larger than standard bits and should be used with the router mounted in a router table.
Many router bits are expensive, so store them carefully and use a clean cloth to wipe off pitch, dust, and dirt after each use. Keep the cutting edges sharp and avoid using bits that are dirty, rusted, or damaged.
