Basic introduction to wood drill bits for special use
Besides the most common types of bits, there are a variety of bits only ones that make easy work of certain specialized operations. While most of them are readily available at your local home center or hardware store others are a little harder to the find.Visit title = "plans and woodworking designs"> Woodwork Plans web pages for more articles carpentry.
Bits long can be a real lifeline "when you need to drill holes through or pieces large thickness of material. 12 bits long twist-style are easy to find … but long brad points are another story. Although the latter are available lengths of 10 ", 12" and "up to 18 years, you have to do some searching to find a source.
Vix Bits are the best option to ensure that the hardware mounting screw holes match exactly in the center with the holes in the hardware. Just click the hardware in place on the workpiece and the use of portable electric drill to drill the mounting holes. Every bit has a spring loaded plunger with a tapered end that matches with countersunk in the hinge or other hardware piece. By pushing the bit into the workpiece, the end of the plunger remains perfectly in the center hole. Very clever!
Bits are similar to standard plastic-twist style bits … except they have a steeper, about 60 degrees which provides a higher cutting lip more area and better performance to cut through all types of plastics. Steepest This minimizes the chance of grabbing and jumping during the process drilling.
Glass bits are solid carbide and have a point as the spearhead of an extremely smooth hole through of all types of glass. Should be used exclusively in a drill press on slow speed. For best results, build a small, circular "prey" around the location of the hole with plumber's putty (Putty steel). Pour a small amount of turpentine and start drilling. Insert the bit very slowly in the hole. Take your time and do not rush the process.
Hand saws are best for cutting large diameter. They are easily available at most home centers and hardware stores in sizes up to about 3 ". They have a pilot drill to help you locate the center its hole and keep on target throughout the boring process. As a result, can be used in a drill press or portable electric drill. They are also available in standard (shallow) or deep boring models will go through 2 "or more wood in one pass – and the ordinary steel sawing the teeth or tooth carbide for drilling through hard woods and nonferrous metals.
Screw Drills are unique "triple feature bit to drill a pilot hole for the tapered screw threads, a countersink the screw head and (if you prefer) a recess to accept a wooden plug that is stuck in place to hide the screw on certain types of projects. They are available individually for screw sizes # 5 to # 12 … or in complete sets and most are fully adjustable for countersunk screw length and boring and depth. They are real to save time and worth the investment if you use a lot of screws for their projects together. They work equally well on a drill press or portable electric drill.
